Do I need to
repair a small crack right away? |
|
Yes. A small crack or chip
can spread quickly so that it can no longer be repaired and the windshield
will need to be replaced, which requires more time to fix and is more
expensive. On modern cars, the windshield is a structural part of the car
that supports the roof. If it is weakened because of a crack, it will not
provide proper support. |

Is it
important to have the work done by a certified technician?
|
|
Certification improves
safety and legality of installation.
There
are many factors, techniques and decisions that need to be considered by the
person repairing or replacing your windshield. There is much important
information about autoglass and installation that an installer may not know
without training and certification.
The decision to repair or
replace is only the beginning. Other decisions include:
-
Knowing the safe and
correct procedures for using the equipment.
-
Which adhesive to use
and how to apply it and how long it must cure depends on many factors
including temperature and humidity.
-
The correct techniques
for preparing the surface of the windshield and the opening.
-
There are several layers
of primers and preps to apply in addition to the adhesive. Not including
any of these materials will seriously reduce the strength of the bond.
Besides being a structural
component of a modern automobile, the windshield is also part of the safety
system. For instance, the passenger side airbag deploys by rebounding off
the windshield. If the windshield is not bonded to the opening properly, the
airbag’s effectiveness is greatly reduced.
Having
installation or repair done by experienced professionals ensures a safe,
clean, proper installation and reduces the chances of failures or leaks. |

Is the glass
in a windshield different than the other window glass? |
|
Windshields are made of
two pieces of glass laminated together with a layer of vinyl between. In the
event of a collision, it will stay together. Tempered glass is used for the
rear window and side glass. Although it’s strength exceeds that of normal
glass, if it breaks, it shatters into small pieces instead of sharp shards.
Using laminated glass for the windshield
and tempered glass for the rest of the glass in the vehicle is intended to
make it as safe as possible if a collision occurs.
